The Venetian Castle of Zakynthos is ideal for a morning or afternoon stroll. The central square is car free and the Venetian Castle on the green Strani hill is an impressive landmark. The fortress is located about 2km from the city under the shade of tall pine trees. The island's capital used to be inside the fortress during the Venetian period. Several geological phenomena and conquerors have caused serious damages to the fortress, but still there are so many things you can see there. An impressive detail worth discovering is the “St Marco's Lion”, a typical Venetian symbol of that period that decorates the fortress' walls. The castle offers a beautiful view over Zakynthos' city. You and your chlidren can stop for refreshments in the cafeteria near by that offers a wonderful view of the city.
