Santorini is the most photographed and most recognizable island of Greece. It is famous for its steep cliffs, picturesque white houses and the azure blue sea. Santorini, also called Thera or Thira, lies in the Aegean Sea and belongs to the Cyclades island group. Santorini is a 6 islands group: Santorini, Thirasia, Aspronisi, Palea, Kameni, Nea Kameni and Christiani. This cluster of little islands was created during volcanic eruptions in the middle of the islets. On the main island, several villages were spectacularly on built and against the steep rocks. The beaches are on the east and south, they have black and brown sand of volcanic origin. You can reach Santorini by plane and boat, the island has an airport and two ports. The harbor on the west coast, Skala, is where the big cruise ships arrive. The other, Athinios port, is used for yachts and ferry boats.
Due to it’s little steep streets with steps and cliffs, Santorini can be a challenge to visit it with young children. But do not let that stop you from visiting with your family. Santorini has excellent family resorts and there are things to see and do with kids. Santorini is a very special island and is definitely recommended to go and experience it. Even the arrival on the island is impressive. From the plane you can see the moon-shaped island emerge in the bright blue sea. If you arrive by boat, the view of the steep rocky wall will amaze everyone.... the island gets very hot in the summer and therefore we advise you to plan your family excursions early in the morning or afternoon.
