Nafplion, true family friendly destination! At short distance from Athens (our children do not like long travels) a great variety of (inexpensive) in – and outdoor things to do with younger and older children (we visited with kids from ages 2 – 7): mountains, beaches, parks with playgrounds, historic places (3 castles and world famous ancient sites), museums, galleries, a long seaside boulevard and a beautiful car-free Old Town with endless alleys full off little shops, guesthouses, hotels and tavern’s. One of our favorites: the Old Town’s central Syntagma square. Large and very safe, surrounded by the Archaeological museum, cafes and a restaurant, where we relaxed and had coffee while watching our children play around.

The Family Friendly accommodation in the Old Town of Nafplion can be tricky. Although there are several hotels and guesthouses that offer family rooms and apartments, many of them are bo utique style places in old mansions (many without elevators) and most are up hill and require many steps up and down (with strollers !) to be reached. To our pleasant surprise was our boutique hotel 999 Luxury Hotel Nafplio not only on the Staikopoulou main street of the Old Town (but our room with balcony on the side alley and therefore quiet at night), it was also newly built, and had view on Nafplion’s famous castle from the room. There is a staircase at the reception area but we left our strollers downstairs and all our kids managed to walk the stairs. The hotel was very inspiring and clean, there are family rooms (without balcony), baby cots, a highchair and an extremely helpful staff, this place is definitely suitable for family !
