Celeste’s family top 5 favorite things to do with children… in Athens

Let’s start this new year with a list. What are my favorite places in Athens to visit with my kids? It is difficult to choose, I can easily come up with a list of 25 or so. So I looked at the places that we visited the most frequently in 2015. Where do I always take my relatives and friends when visiting from abroad ?  And where do I go with my local friends as well? And which places will I surely visit again this year? The places that made it to my list are a fun day out for both the adults and children in every age:

1. Plaka and Monasteraki

A walk around the historic Plaka and Monasteraki area is not only a favorite excursion for  families visiting from abroad. Winter and Summer, any time of the day, me and my family always love coming here.

Our favorite stop in Plaka is the Lisikrati Square. The children love playing safely on the grass around the ancient monument (built in 334 – 333 BC!) whilst we adults enjoy a drink or a meal in one of the restaurants around the square

2. The Athens Zoo or Attiko Parko

We have been visiting the Attiko Parko ever since our first child was a baby. We still try to go there at least once per 2 months although in summer it can get very hot in the park. Our most recent visit was in January 2016 to see the latest addition of the park: the Asian Elephants !

Children under 3 years old do not pay and on the so called ‘Stroller Friday’, every mom or dad who will come with a baby stroller will pay the discounted price of 10 Euro. The zoo also offers various discounted packages for (large) families and special prices for seniors and disabled persons.

3. The Acropolis Museum

Maybe not a monthly visit but at least couple of times per year. One of my greatest passions is history and Archeology and my daughter seems to follow me. Sometimes we just discover a specific selection in the permanent exhibition of the  museum and on other occasions do family tour or one of the special tours for children with a child friendly guide. The museum organizes a variety of special events on a regular basis. In summer we love the museum night. Check out the programme on the website ! We also enjoy going to the restaurant or the book corner to relax and get into history.

4. Malakasa Adventure Park

I love to be active and I love to be outdoors. The Adventure Park combines these. It is located near the national road Athens – Lamia at about 40 kilometer from Athens center. I live in the Northern suburbs therefore near my home. But even when you do not live that close, it is still worth a visit. The park is set in 50 acres of forest with enormous pine trees and impressive mountains. It is safe, clean and great fun for a family day out. Even the little ones will enjoy the vegetable garden (they can do gardening) and the picnic area. Adults (‘the Eagles’) and children starting from 3 years old  (‘the Squirrels’) can enjoy the trees, challenging ropes, swings, platforms and more. Find out how we spent our day at this amazing place in my next blog article.

5. Flisvos Park and Flisvos Marina in Palio Faliro

Again a place that offers a full day out all year around and for the whole family. Flisvos park is one of the best playgrounds in Attica. It is located right next to the sea and Flisvos Marina, along Poseidonos Avenue. The park is free, organized by the municipality of P. Faliro and divided in 3 different areas according the age of the children. There are also plenty of cafes and picnic places as well as bike route, a dog park and an open-air cinema. I love the fact that we are playing outdoors and enjoy the sea and fresh sea air at the same time. Flisvos Marina offers a soft play area (with entrance fee), a luna park with electronic games and restaurants, cafes and watersports. Dinner or coffee at the yacht club is never boring. And what about a visit to the Averof Warship Museum located in Flisvos Marina ? Read more about it all this in my next post.
